Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $95,054)

The Delaware County Office of the Medical Examiner (DCOME) is responsible for investigating cases of sudden, unexpected, and/or violent deaths that occur within Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The DCOME provides support to 50 jurisdictions and works with 42 police agencies, the Pennsylvania State Police, and the Delaware County District Attorney’ Office and its Criminal Investigation Division. Additionally, the DCOME serves seven different hospital systems and various nursing homes throughout the county. The DCOME will utilize this funding to purchase equipment, software, and staff training that will increase its compliance with the accreditation standards established by the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME). Led by the Chief Medical Examiner, the DCOME is staffed by a dedicated team of forensic investigators, autopsy technicians, forensic pathologists, and administrative support staff who work together to conduct detailed postmortem examinations, issue death certifications, draw medical conclusions, and uphold exemplary standards in medicolegal death investigations and community engagement.
