Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $2,378,897)
The Illinois State Police proposes to continue its efforts to reduce the forensic biology/DNA backlog and increase the number of DNA samples analyzed for entry into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) by strategically implementing the following activities: outsource forensic DNA samples to an accredited laboratory; pay overtime for existing laboratory employees to process, screen, record and/or analyze forensic DNA samples; and purchase critical supplies attributed to the analysis of forensic DNA casework. The goal is to reduce the number of forensic DNA samples awaiting analysis and avoid a substantial backlog of forensic DNA samples. The expected outcomes include the completion of approximately 32,000 forensic biology/DNA assignments over a 24-month period, and approximately 100 sexual assault cases outsourced to an external vendor. Law enforcement agencies, the victims and the families of the victims are the intended beneficiaries of the project.
