Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $243,744)

The Prince George’s County Police Department, Forensic Science Division, an American National Standards Institute National Accreditation Board accredited laboratory, is requesting funding under the FY24 DNA Capacity Enhancement for Backlog Reduction Program. The purpose of this grant is to outsource DNA evidence from backlogged cases to reduce the current backlog of DNA cases.

The county, with a population of approximately 950,000 people, continues to see a relatively high crime rate, second only to Baltimore City in the state of Maryland. The need for this type of financial assistance continues due to limited staffing and resources within our department. The needs of investigators and prosecutors keep demand for service high.
