The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Institute for Digital Health & Innovation Brain Injury Program proposes to plan and implement Crisis Care Coalition with Police Understanding & Learning for Safe Encounters. The purpose is to empower Arkansas law enforcement and crisis stabilization units with the expertise to recognize and properly respond to traumatic brain injury (TBI) within the justice-involved population throughout the state. Project activities include conducting a needs assessment, establishing an ongoing steering committee, developing training curriculum and a TBI referral process, implementing specialized education and training to include simulation encounters, and developing a sustainability plan.
Expected outcomes include enhancement of encounter safety, appropriate crisis responses, and streamlined access to TBI resources. A statewide initiative, Crisis Care Coalition with Police Understanding & Learning for Safe Encounters will cultivate an informed law enforcement officer and crisis stabilization units community, reduce incident escalations, and optimize resource allocation, thereby bolstering community resilience and safety.
