Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $714,114)
The Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grant Program application is focused on the funding of 13 agencies throughout the state of Ohio that will work to ensure quality and efficient processing of forensic services to criminal justice professionals. The world of forensic science is ever-changing, and it is vital that laboratory personnel and medical examiners are equipped with proper technology, equipment and training to ensure that the most up to date forensic science techniques are implemented to improve the quality and timeliness of services provided. Specifically, as new and emerging drugs are introduced into communities across Ohio, it is important that forensic laboratories have the means to identify and report on these illicit substances. The main goals for this proposal are to: retain qualified personnel to assist in the reduction/elimination of backlog in the areas of analysis of forensic science evidence; obtain critical and up-to-date information available on forensic analysis through professional conferences, instrument manufacturers, training and networking; and procure technology and supplies that will maintain or enhance laboratory accreditation, quality assurance and analytical ability to maintain the standards of ASCLD/LAB accreditation. The continued training in forensic science courses will enhance each analyst with knowledge and enable them to employ the most current techniques, information, and protocols when conducting forensic examinations and analyses. As a result, the quality and timeliness of forensic services provided to law enforcement agencies throughout the state of Ohio will be significantly improved with this funding.
