Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $82,049)

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs will serve as the fiscal agent for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama.  The District s made up of the 13 counties located in the southwest corner of the state. The majority of the District consists of rural areas which encompass small municipalities. Mobile, the District's largest population center, is at the intersection of two major north-south and east-west interstates I-65 and I-10, and is a 30 minute drive to Mississippi or Florida. The Northern Division of the District includes five of the District's 13 counties. These five counties are among those with the highest rates of poverty in the state. The most serious violent crime problems within the SDAL are repeat violent offenders and gang activity, primarily involving 18–24-year-olds often claiming a Neighborhood Based Gangs (NBGs) or group affiliation based on family or geography.

The SDAL will work with local law enforcement agencies, federal partners, and community-based organizations to support established and ongoing efforts of our local departments to investigate and interrupt gang activity and identify and impact repeat violent offenders.  Funds will be used to provide training for state and local law enforcement partners on addressing gang activity and violent crime; continued reentry efforts and deterrence programs to prevent or de-escalate criminal activity, violent criminal recidivism, and gang membership/activity; and support ongoing law enforcement and gang task force efforts to identify repeat violent offenders and gang actors for federal prosecution.
