The City of Jackson Police Department will be the fiscal agent for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan. Fiscal Year 2024 Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) funds will be used to support the Violent Gang and Gun Crime Reduction Program that is focused on reducing violent gang and gun crimes within the City of Jackson. The city experiences consistent violent crime.
This PSN award will facilitate increased collaboration between the Jackson Police Department; Jackson County Office of the Sheriff; Michigan State Police; Blackman-Leoni Township Department of Public Safety; Jackson County Office of the Prosecutor; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms; United States Attorney's Office; Michigan Department of Corrections; and service providing agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Service, Group Violence Intervention, and the Jackson Public School District. This task force is focused on reducing gang-related homicides, shootings, violent crimes, and illegally possessed firearms while educating impressionable youth to deter them from gangs through cooperative enforcement initiatives and education. These initiatives and programs will enhance the communities’ capacity to address quality-of-life issues, factors driving violent crimes, and leverage community resources for continued success within the identified area experiencing high levels of gang and violent crimes.
Michigan State University will serve as the research partner providing data-driven and evidence-based approaches to enforcement initiatives and community outreach programs.
