Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $181,683)
The Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) model for the United States Attorney's Office (USAO) for the Western District of Tennessee will continue implementation in both Shelby County and the City of Jackson. PSN is a collaborative local and federal effort to reduce violent gun crime by focusing on crime drivers. PSN West aims to better integrate research evidence and human intelligence to enhance criminal justice efforts to address the ongoing issue of violent crime. Human intelligence will be studied by comparing crime drivers to a similarly situated control group who are not subject to enhanced focus by the criminal justice system. Enhanced focus for crime drivers means increasing arrests, prosecution, and adequate sentencing while simultaneously sharing locally developed crime reduction outreach campaigns to spread awareness of the law enforcement and prosecutorial approach to gun crime.
The PSN West partners include Shelby County District Attorney's Office; USAO Western District of Tennessee; Tennessee Office of Criminal Justice Programs; Memphis Police Department; Shelby County Sheriff's Office; Tennessee Department of Correction Division of Probation and Parole; Themis Center for Justice Policy, Practice and Research; Madison County District Attorney's Office; Madison County Sheriff's Office; and Jackson Police Department.
