Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $162,444)

The District of Kansas (DOK) grant strategies will address criminal organizations through prevention, intervention, suppression/enforcement, and community engagement/outreach programs related to violent issues. The specific violent crime issues addressed with the grant strategies will include gang, gun, drug, and domestic violence, with particular emphasis on juvenile violent crime. Incidents of gun violence will focus on felons in possession of firearms, juveniles in possession of firearms, gang-related incidents, domestic violence, and drug-related incidents. A priority focal concern will be on shooting incidents and homicides involving a firearm. To address these issues, the DOK will focus its efforts on the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program around 1) community engagement, 2) prevention and intervention, 3) focused and strategic enforcement, and 4) accountability. 
 
Fiscal Year 2024 Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) grant funding will be used to reduce violent crime. The specific usage of the funds is to 1) purchase licensing, software agreements, and equipment, which will be used to gather evidence and intelligence for components of Real-Time Crime Centers and Risk-Terrain Modeling, and proactively alert the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) Enforcement Team and Support Officers, including providing training for the Southwestern part on the NIBIN system and data entry; 2) fund overtime salaries for gang task force members to provide further community engagement, proactive special assignments including the Law Enforcement Against Drugs & Violence (LEAD) program, gang intelligence, targeted enforcement for violent criminals, and apprehension; 3) purchase equipment, supplies, resources, and support for the Juvenile Intervention Unit; 4) host events and meetings to discuss PSN goals for the DOK; and 5) fund conference travel for three PSN Task Force Members to attend the 2024 PSN conference.
