Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $142,320)
The Rosamons Gifford Charitable Corp will serve as the fiscal agent for the Northern District of New York FY2024 PSN funding. The District will direct its Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) award to Syracuse, New York, in Onondaga County, supporting its comprehensive and integrated gun and gang violence reduction initiatives. Over the past several years, Syracuse has made deliberate efforts to build violent crime strategies along the entire continuum of violence reduction strategies, emphasizing intervention and prevention. Syracuse has experienced reductions in gun violence. From January through July 2024, the number of shootings with injury or death were 48 percent lower than the five-year average. Shooting victims reflect a similar decrease (down 54 percent in 2024, compared to the five-year average). The Syracuse Police Department has recovered more firearms in 2024 compared to 2023 (6% increase); ghost guns (privately made firearms) continue to represent an issue with 21 recovered in just the first 7 months of 2024.
The District will use FY 2024 funds to support Syracuse in multi-agency collaboration, research, and proactive law enforcement details, including, but not limited to, the work of its Interstate Gun Trafficking working group and the Gang Violence Task Force (GVTF) and prevention efforts.
