Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $863,118)
The Department of the Attorney General, Crime Prevention and Justice Assistance Division, Grants and Planning Branch (Department) proposes to implement the FY 24 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program to advance the following goals: (1) decrease the impact of drug crime in Hawaii; (2) decrease the barriers to community integration in Hawaii; (3) support capacity building and coordination efforts in Hawaii’s criminal justice system; and (4) support the State of Hawaii’s and/or counties’ ability to address urgent or emergent criminal justice issues.
The Department’s project activities will include issuing a competitive solicitation for subgrantee projects to fulfill the four goals. Additionally, the Department plans to develop a grant writing and/or grant management training, with the aim of developing organizations’ ability to compete for and manage U.S. Department of Justice grant funds. To encourage public/private partnerships, the Department will also facilitate meetings in each of Hawaii’s counties to encourage communication and cooperation among criminal justice organizations.
Expected outcomes include funding at least two projects per fiscal year that focuses on decreasing the impact of drug crime; awarding funding to the Statewide Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Task Force each fiscal year; awarding one or more projects per fiscal year that will assist at least one hundred justice-involved individuals or other community individuals experiencing barriers to community integration; funding one or more project(s) per fiscal year that will support capacity building and coordination; and funding one or more project(s) per fiscal year to address an urgent or emergent criminal justice issue or an otherwise important criminal justice issue.
