The University of Hawaii West Oahu (UHWO) proposes to implement the Hawaii State Targeted Violence Prevention – School Community and Threat Assessment Team Training Capacity Building Project under Category 1 of this funding opportunity. The purpose of this project is to increase threat assessment and violence prevention capabilities in K-12 public, private, and charter schools and their communities throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Project activities include foundational training on the importance of threat assessment in schools and campus communities; in-depth training sessions for threat assessment models and approaches; facilitation of culturally-informed discussions with school communities; education on various bystander intervention techniques; support of school-based Behavior Threat Assessment teams; and participation in professional development and continuing education opportunities by school community members to increase threat assessment knowledge. Partnerships that will support the efforts of this project include the Hawaii Office of Homeland Security, the Hawaii State Fusion Center, the Hawaii Department of Education, Threat Team Hawaii, Honolulu Police Department, and other public and private organizations. Additionally, UHWO is a lead implementing partner in the State Targeted Violence Prevention Implementation Plan, working closely with Homeland Security and Hawaii State Fusion Center to achieve state-wide violence prevention.
