Proposal Abstract
The Puerto Rico Department of Justice (PRDOJ), as the State Administering Agency, submits this proposal to the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) for funding under the BJA FY24 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. The purpose of this proposal is to enhance public safety and support law enforcement efforts across Puerto Rico through a pass-through mechanism to various sub-recipients. These sub-recipients include local law enforcement agencies, community organizations, and other justice-related entities that are critical to addressing crime and promoting justice at the municipal level.
The primary activities of this project focus on strengthening law enforcement operations, improving the investigation and prosecution of crimes, and supporting prevention and intervention programs designed to reduce recidivism and enhance public safety. Funds will be allocated to initiatives that include equipment purchases, training for officers, community policing efforts, crime prevention strategies, and the development of data-driven practices to better respond to criminal activity. These activities will be supported through a robust monitoring and evaluation process to ensure program integrity and compliance with federal requirements.
Expected outcomes of the project include increased operational capacity for local law enforcement agencies, improved criminal justice processes, enhanced community safety, and a reduction in crime rates across targeted areas. The project will also promote collaboration between law enforcement, community organizations, and local government bodies to create sustainable solutions to public safety challenges.
The service area for this project spans across multiple municipalities in Puerto Rico, targeting high-crime areas and vulnerable communities in need of enhanced law enforcement support and resources. The intended beneficiaries include the citizens of Puerto Rico, particularly those residing in underserved areas, as well as law enforcement personnel and other justice stakeholders who will receive resources to improve their ability to combat crime and protect communities.
Sub-recipients of this grant funding will be selected through a competitive process and will be responsible for implementing project activities in alignment with the goals of the JAG program and PRDOJ's overarching mission to uphold justice and public safety in Puerto Rico.
