Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $1,000,000)
The Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District (CH-UH) faces significant challenges with school violence, reflected in rising incidents of fighting, pre-fighting, and harassment, bullying and intimidation across its diverse student population. To address these issues, CH-UH proposes Project CARE (Creating A Respecful Environment), focusing on implementing evidence-based Social Emotional Learning (SEL) strategies within a Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) framework. Supported by a federal STOP Violence grant, CARE aims to enhance school climate, reduce behavior referrals and curtail suspensions by deploying additional staff trained in SEL and PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports). Character Strong, an evidence-based SEL curriculum aligned with CASEL and Ohio Department of Education competencies, will be central to this initiative. Data-driven decision-making, including regular assessments and surveys, will guide ongoing program adjustments and ensure fidelity of implementation. The district's commitment to sustainability includes a comprehensive plan involving stakeholder training, continuous monitoring and data review, and working with community organizations like the Cleveland Peacemakers Alliance. By integrating SEL into its core educational strategies, CH-UH seeks to create safer, more supportive school environments conducive to academic and personal growth for all students so that students report feeling safe and connected to the school community.
