Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $12,514)

The Yankton Police Department (YPD) proposes to implement the use of new bodyworn cameras.  The purpose is to replace older body worn cameras, which have been utilized by YPD since 2018.  Project activities include the purchase of 15 body worn cameras, chest mounts for each camera, extra battery and two charging stations.  These cameras will be utilized for patrol or investigation work.  This includes calls for service, traffic stops, arrests, interviewing of victims, witnesses and suspects.  These cameras will have less issues with battery life, recording glitches and failures to record. The Yankton Police Department had 13,699 calls for service in 2023.  The City of Yankton has a population of about 15,000 people.  The agency assists other law enforcement entities within our municipality.  YPD has a body worn camera policy in place. Officers shall activate their cameras in the performance of their duties.  This protects the officers, citizens and vistors of Yankton.
