Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $16,754)

The Jamestown Police Department seeks funding through the BJA FY24 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program to address critical operational needs that enhance law enforcement effectiveness and community safety. With an allocated budget of $16,754, the department plans to purchase disposable nitrile gloves and portable barricades to improve officer safety and public protection.

Given the socio-economic challenges facing Jamestown, including a poverty rate of 28.2%—significantly above state and national averages, the need for enhanced law enforcement resources is urgent. Disposable nitrile gloves will protect officers from bloodborne pathogens and hazardous substances, including fentanyl, while aiding in the preservation of evidence through contamination prevention. The investment of $10,000 in these gloves will bolster officer safety and operational efficacy.

Additionally, the $6,754 dedicated to portable barricades will significantly enhance the department's capacity to manage public safety during emergencies, special events, and crime scenes. Barricades will provide vital physical barriers to protect pedestrians and officers while allowing for efficient traffic control.

By strategically investing in these critical supplies, the Jamestown Police Department aims to strengthen community trust, improve public safety, and foster a legitimate law enforcement presence. This grant will play a pivotal role in empowering our officers to effectively combat crime and manage challenges in a community that is both economically vulnerable and facing significant public safety concerns.
