Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $18,003)
The Riley County Police Department (RCPD) will use JAG funds for purchasing handguns for police officers. This aids in recruitment and retention when officers do not have to purchase their own handgun for duty use. This allows our training department to have armors for one weapons system to maintain the handguns and teach and train on a single firearm platform for handguns. Specifically, the grant funds will be used to purchase duty issued handguns.
RCPD has annual qualifications and training throughout the year on handgun proficiency and retention of the firearm. The Department purchases a handgun for new police officers and maintains the firearm over several years with department trained armors. After a period of time, the handguns need more parts and maintenance to keep the handgun proficient for law enforcement use and thus the old handguns are cycled out of service as maintenance costs increase. During the first year of the grant period RCPD will purchase 34 duty handguns for officers.
The 2023 allocation for Riley County is $18,003. RCPD will apply the entire grant allocation towards 2024 expenses related to equipping officers with updated handguns, iron sites and holsters. Specifically, the funds will be used to purchase 34 duty handguns. If awarded the JAG funds, RCPD will purchase the firearms in 2024 with anticipated delivery of all the handguns in early 2025 for implementation into our program rotation.
