Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $11,116)

The City of Bethel proposes to combine the $11,116 Justice Assistance Grant allocation with City funds to hire a company to procure and install new external security cameras, internal security cameras, a viewing station, and install card reader systems on six doors at the Bethel Police Department. The project is complete when everything is installed, commissioned, and working properly. The City of Bethel estimates the total project cost to be $71,442.36.

The purpose of the project is to provide better protection for police personnel and property. The three outdoor cameras and ten indoor cameras will provide security footage that can be reviewed if an incident occurs or something is missing or vandalized. The security cameras also act to protect police officers against wrongful claims by the public, contractors on-site, or fellow officers. Camera video footage provides a non-biased view of what really happened.

The door card readers will allow a more controlled environment because only cardholders will be allowed to access certain doors. All entries and exits through the doors will be recorded. This information will help catch thieves and prevent theft. The cards will limit access when officers resign or are terminated. Cards can be reprogrammed easily and quickly.

The community of Bethel will benefit from a safe and secure law enforcement facility and safe and secure officers. The specific service area is the Bethel Police Station and grounds on which it sits. The protection area includes people in and around vehicles that are in the camera capture zone.
