Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $27,723)

In November of 2021 the Rio Rancho Police Department operationalized the use of License Plate Reader (LPR) cameras within the City of Rio Rancho. LPR cameras are a specialized type of camera designed to capture and analyze vehicle license plate information in real time. Utilizing advanced image processing software, LPR cameras can accurately identify and record license plate information even in challenging conditions such as low light, high speeds, or poor weather.

The LPRs were deployed in major intersections with the goal to identify, track and locate potentially stolen vehicles entering the City. Enabling quick and efficient action, while preventing further crime before it happens. Furthermore, data collected by LPRs is used as investigative leads to assist in the successful identification of suspects as well as the closure and prosecution of major crimes that occur within the City.

Over the last three years, the use of LPRs and their related technology has been a beneficial tool to assist the Department in ensuring the protection and safety of our community through the highest standards of professionalism and excellence in police services. Moving forward, the goal is to increase the number of cameras pointing in alternate directions to increase the likelihood of thwarting further crime within the City.
