Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $38,616)
The City of North Miami is seeking funding through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program to enhance the communication capabilities of the North Miami Police Department. The project aims to improve public safety by purchasing eight (8) police dispatch radios, ensuring effective communication between patrol officers, dispatchers, and supervisors. The radios are critical for officer safety, situational awareness, and efficient response to emergency calls, including incidents of domestic violence and shootings.
The department's patrol officers and traffic unit rely heavily on these radios as their primary communication tool during daily operations. In addition to ensuring the safety of officers, the equipment facilitates communication during crisis intervention and de-escalation efforts. The radios also enable supervisors to monitor multiple channels and officers across different community locations, improving coordination and accountability.
This project aligns with North Miami's broader public safety strategy, which includes partnerships with neighboring jurisdictions through multiple Mutual Aid Agreements (MAAs). These agreements allow for multi-agency cooperation in emergencies and routine operations, further enhancing the regional crime prevention and enforcement efforts.
By expanding the department’s dispatch radio inventory, the City of North Miami aims to maintain a secure, reliable, and modern communication system that supports its law enforcement operations and ensures the safety of its officers and community.
