Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $42,442)

The West Jordan Police Department is the third largest municipal department in the Salt Lake Valley with one hundred thirty-three (133) full-time officers. The department is a full-service department that offers Patrol, Investigations, Evidence, Records, K9, SWAT, School Resource Officers, Traffic Enforcement, Accident Investigation, etc.

The West Jordan Police Department currently has thirteen (13) fully certified level one operators in the public order unit. These thirteen employees are divided into two squads. Each squad has one sergeant. A commander supervises the entire unit. Funding from the JAG assistance will be used to purchase approximately one hundred fifteen helmets for the remaining officers in the department. Head protection is the most expensive, yet most important piece of equipment the officers can have. Much of the other equipment needed is more easily accessible and affordable for purchase using existing department funds.

After helmets have been purchased and received, officers will be used to support the two existing squads in the department as well as being a resource to allied agencies in surrounding jurisdictions. West Jordan has a youth detention facility in its city limits as well as the adult detention center in a neighboring jurisdiction. West Jordan officers will be trained and available to assist at either facility, or any other situation, if/when the need arises.
