Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $52,793)

The purpose of this grant application for the Bureau of Justice Assistance FY24 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG)-Local Solicitation is to request funds to purchase equipment that will improve the operations of the Alton Police Department, Granite City Police Department, and Madison Police Department.

The Alton Police Department will use FY24 JAG funds to ensure necessary protective equipment is available for each officer should a civil disturbance occur.  The protective equipment includes but is not limited to gloves, helmets, arm/leg protectors, shields, and batons.  The protective equipment will be securely stored until it would be needed by officers.  This type of equipment is vital for officers to have as it helps protect them, reduce injuries, and potentially saves lives.

The Granite City Police Department will use FY24 JAG funds to purchase a vehicle that will be used to transport homeless persons to housing alternatives, mental health and drug abuse treatment centers, and to reunite them with family members. This will assist in their community policing efforts to help those most in need in their community.

The Madison Police Department will use FY 24 JAG funds to purchase necessary equipment for both officer and community safety.  Specifically, they will purchase Tasers, Taser holsters, and cartridges in order to help ensure officer safety and the safety of those in use of force situations. Tasers have no doubt and will continue to save lives/injuries to both officers and those officers engage with.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office has elected to forgo any FY24 JAG funds so that the maximum amount of funds can be utilized by the Alton, Granite City, and Madison Police Departments.
