Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $58,691)

The disparate jurisdictions of the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office and the Lafayette Consolidated Government will use JAG funds for the procurement of equipment.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office will procure equipment which includes laptops, a router, modems and a smartboard.  We believe that the funding will have an effect on all branches of our organization.  The goal of the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office is to enhance our activities pertaining to crime prevention, control or reduction on the enforcement of the criminal law, including, but no limited to, police efforts to prevent, control or reduce crime.  The areas of emphasis we intend to focus on are reducing violent crime, officer safety and wellness and responding to the opiod crisis.  The project identifiers we will incorporate are computer software/hardware.

The Lafayette Police Department will procure 4 crime cameras.  This is a system which will capture both images of suspect vehicle license plates as well as the vehicle itself.  The crime cameras will be stationed at various points throughout the city.  Using data received from these devices will enhance the department's ability in predictive policing.  The data can be used to determine crime hot spots, stolen vehicle locations, and routes commonly used by criminals during the commission of a crime.  Once these cameras have retrieved data, and the data is reviewed by members of the PAR team, our officers will be able to saturate "hotspot" areas, therefore effectively reducing gun, drug and gang related crime.
