Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $62,534)

The Denton Police Department (DPD) seeks grant funding to acquire a mobile camera surveillance trailer. This equipment will enhance the department's real-time situational awareness, crucial for deploying appropriate resources during ongoing events. Additionally, the DPD is tasked with ensuring public safety at large-scale events, and this trailer will significantly contribute to creating a secure environment for residents and visitors enjoying community activities organized by the City of Denton in collaboration with various private partners.

The Colony Police Department seeks to implement Virtual Reality (VR) technology for de-escalation training to enhance officer readiness and community safety. This initiative aligns with the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program’s goals of improving law enforcement practices, building public trust, and is listed as an approved use of JAG funds. VR creates immersive, real-world scenarios where officers can practice de-escalation techniques in a safe, controlled environment, refining communication and conflict resolution skills without the risks or limitations of live role-play. It also reduces the need for physical resources like training spaces and actors, making it a cost-efficient and scalable solution for continuous training. The technology can be tailored to address specific challenges, such as mental health crises or domestic disputes, offering targeted, relevant training. Additionally, VR systems track officer performance, identifying areas for improvement, which aligns with JAG’s emphasis on evidence-based practices. By investing in VR for de-escalation, the department demonstrates its commitment to reducing the use of force, promoting community policing, and reinforcing public trust. The technology will be integrated into our Field Training Program and annual in-service training to enhance officer responses to difficult situations through improved de-escalation techniques. The equipment package will include all necessary VR hardware and software, service agreements for updates, and required peripherals for system operation.

The Lewisville Police Department (LPD) is requesting grant funding for the purchase of 20 certified riot control gear suits for sworn officers. This equipment includes puncture resistant gloves, NIJ 0104.02 standard helmets along with uniform pants, and long sleeve shirts with department branding. The equipment will assist LPD’s Mobile Force team in providing a rapid response to active incidents while maintaining safety and sufficient visibility and identifiability of the responding officers. Additionally, the acquisition of this equipment will allow law enforcement personnel to properly and safely train for incidents where a quick response is needed.
