Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $71,667)

The City of Waterbury Police Department will use JAG funds to enhance efforts in combating violent crime, particularly gun violence and related criminal activity. These funds will primarily support overtime costs for officers engaged in investigations, enforcement actions, and other critical operations targeting violent offenses. In addition to these enforcement-focused activities, a portion of the funds will be directed to the Waterbury Police Activity League (PAL) to purchase supplies for various youth programs. These programs are designed to engage young people in constructive and positive activities, offering alternatives to criminal behavior while providing opportunities for mentorship and community involvement. By supporting these youth initiatives, WPD and PAL seek to prevent violence before it starts, helping young people make positive choices and stay away from crime. Moreover, these programs will serve as a platform for fostering stronger relationships between law enforcement and the community. Through positive interactions in these youth-focused settings, officers can build trust, respect, and cooperation with community members, reinforcing the idea that public safety is a shared responsibility.
