Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $116,326)
The Worcester Police Department (WPD) seeks federal funding through the Edward M. Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (FY24 Local Solicitation Program) to enhance our response to quality of life issues throughout the City of Worcester, and to continue to build and foster relationships with members of the Worcester Community. Additionally, this funding will allow WPD to maintain a monthly presence of 37 neighborhood and crime watch meetings, 25 of which are in identified high risk areas. Through the Worcester Police Department and in collaboration with neighborhood and community organizations, we will continue to identify, respond, and improve 'quality of life' issues that exist in our neighborhoods, business districts, park, and other public places.
The Worcester Police Department promotes the highest level of public safety and quality of life through exceptional police services to city residents, businesses, and visitors. By working closely with myriad social service providers, mental health agencies, governmental organizations, schools, and private entities, WPD strives to establish a network of interconnected resources to improve public safety outcomes. Central to the success of WPD's community policing initiatives is the Neighborhood Response Team (NRT). The NRT consists of a motivated and experienced group of diverse officers who are reflective of the community they serve. These select officers are not tied to radio calls and are therefore, free to problem solve and interact with the community on a daily basis.
Federal grant funding will allow the Worcester Police Department to continue to maintain direct and active participation at these neighborhood and crime watch meetings and community events, which will enhance collaboration efforts and communication with residents, businesses, and all stakeholders that make up our city.
