Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $122,748)
The Chesapeake Police Department (CPD) is the lead/only applicant of this grant request and is seeking $122,748 for Category 2. The primary service area will be the City of Chesapeake with a population of 252,478, but, due to Chesapeake’s contiguous location with the cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Suffolk and bordering the state of North Carolina, would impact a total service area of over a million (1,000,000) people as we frequently assist our adjoining jurisdictions and many of their residents travel between our cities for work, entertainment, visiting family and friends, etc.
The CPD intends to address the ever-present need to seek high-quality training initiatives that officers can attend that continually will enhance their ability to deliver professional law enforcement services to the citizens they serve. Also with this grant, the CPD will replace the critical equipment of its Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team. This team is responsible for high-risk operations, dignitary protection, hostage rescue, dignitary protection, and other security details as designated. As a multi-purpose tool, the SWAT rifle is required for both close-quarters engagements and long-distance encounters demand an accurate and reliable weapon to ensure proper lifesaving capabilities.
