2024 Byrne Justice Assistance Grant
Applicant: City of Winston-Salem (Police Department)
Project Abstract
The City of Winston-Salem, in collaboration with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office, seeks to enhance public safety through the Fiscal Year 2024 Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. With an allocation of $240,429, evenly split between the City of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, the grant will support critical law enforcement initiatives.
The Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD) will use its share of the funds ($120,214.50) to support two key projects: replacing outdated gym equipment to promote officer wellness and deploying 20-22 strategically placed license plate readers (LPRs) to strengthen real-time crime prevention efforts. The LPRs will be integrated into the department's Real-Time Crime Center, aiding in the identification of suspects and the reduction of violent crime.
The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office will use its portion of the funds ($120,214.50) to enhance the Real-Time Crime Intelligence Center (RTIC) by expanding its use of the Fusus system, which integrates video and data feeds from across the county to improve transparency, information sharing, and crime response times.
Both initiatives align with the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) priorities of crime prevention, intervention, and enhancing technology to support transparency in law enforcement. The City of Winston-Salem, serving as the primary recipient of the grant, will work closely with Forsyth County to ensure successful project implementation and compliance with all grant requirements.
