Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $1,214,202)

The City of Phoenix, Phoenix Police Department, in partnership with the City of Mesa, Mesa Police Department, and the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Officer requests $1,214,202 in Edward Byrne Memorial, Justice Assistance Grant funds. 

The Mesa Police Department will use funding to support technical assistance and training in crime analysis from Arizona State University (ASU). Through this program, two ASU crime analysts will be embedded within the Mesa Police Department to improve organizational capacity to use applied crime analysis to generate, analyze, and report data to assist with operations, decision-making, and policy development.

The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office will use funding to purchase one Forensic Equipment-Temporary Body Storage System. This system will provide a cooler storage unit, refrigeration unit, stainless steel trays, body lift and shipping. Additionally, Personal Protective Supplies and Rapid DNA Chips and Consumables are requested to provide additional N-95 mask, gloves, face shields, aprons etc. and provide rapid DNA chips and consumables to be used for unidentified cases.

The Phoenix Police Department will use funding to purchase necessary supplies and equipment to assist various police units with violent crime reduction and law enforcement programs throughout the City of Phoenix. These essential tools and resources will be used to aid with officer and public safety through multiple projects to enhance police operations.

JAG funds will be used by Phoenix Police Department to purchase modernized technology to refine and develop violent crime reduction strategies utilizing intelligence and data to identify and locate violent crime suspects and individuals at risk of violence and victimization in order to intervene, prevent, and improve outcomes. They will utilize funding to provide additional ballistic shields and light systems to expand the effectiveness of the Patrol Shield Program. Improvements and updated equipment will be purchased to conduct drive test scanning allowing detectives determine what towers service an area and to measure signal strength provided by surrounding sites. Equipment to enhance operational tools for the Bomb Squad Unit will be purchased to assist in all chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high yield explosive situations, including those that may be linked to terrorism, as well as hostage rescue operations. These investments reflect the Phoenix Police Department’s ongoing commitment to using the best available technology and equipment, ensuring the safety of the officers and the communities served in the City of Phoenix.
