Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $499,664)

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, the county’s chief prosecutorial office, in conjunction with the project partner, the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office, seeks funding for a recently established Task Force, the first of its kind in Suffolk County, which is dedicated to identifying missing and unidentified human remains, as well as investigating and prosecuting unsolved homicides. A dedicated Task Force, utilizing modern DNA techniques, is a major step forward in being able to give “Doe” victims their names back, but more importantly providing answers to affected families and apprehending the perpetrators of these crimes. To address this, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office will utilize this funding to implement a specialized initiative. The overall goals of the project are to focus on the identifying missing and unidentified human remains in Suffolk County, which will undoubtedly lead to prosecuting more violent cold cases, but most importantly, to bring long-awaited answers to the families of “Doe” victims on where their loved ones are.
