Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $2,499,819)
The Maricopa County Partially Tested Sexual Assault Kits Inventory and Testing project aims to advance DNA testing efforts and support law enforcement agencies in investigating partially tested sexual assault kits cases. The initiative’s key components include expanding DNA testing capacities and leveraging advanced testing methods such as familial DNA and investigative forensic genealogy.
The initiative will continue the long-standing collaboration through regular multidisciplinary team meetings and the annual Maricopa County SAKI Sexual Assault Conference. These platforms foster communication and coordination among stakeholders, including law enforcement, victim services, forensic lab and medical professionals, and legal teams. Through these regular interactions, the multidisciplinary team can share information, best practices, and training, ensuring a cohesive and comprehensive approach to addressing sexual assault cases.
By addressing staffing challenges, enhancing DNA testing capabilities, and fostering multidisciplinary collaboration, MCAO aims to reduce the backlog of partially tested sexual assault kits, increase successful prosecutions, and provide comprehensive support to victims. This project will improve justice outcomes for sexual assault cases in Maricopa County, building on MCAO’s established track record and leveraging its extensive partnerships.
