Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2022, $500,000)

This project, “Empowering Tetlin Youth,” will focus on the following goals: increase the communication of parents and guardians at Tetlin School; increase overall attendance rates at Tetlin School; and empower Tetlin Youth to lead productive lives. These goals will be achieved though the following objectives:  (1) implement the afterschool program;  (2) purchase 4WheelDrive van to transport youth to and from school to increase attendance rates at Tetlin School (the school does not provide transportation for students); (3) create a welcoming and safe environment for youth at the Tetlin Youth Center; (4) host workshops in the village that will empower the youth and educate parents on ways to help their youth succeed in school and life; and (5) regular meetings with the Tetlin School, Alaska Gateway School District, Tetlin Village Council, Tetlin Tribal Court, Tetlin Youth Program, parents and guardians to keep agencies involved in the success of the Tetlin Students. These objectives will increase the overall attendance rates of students, while educating and encouraging parents and guardians to take an active role in their students’ education; and the students will become empowered to lead productive lives.
