Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $497,506)
The goal of this project is to support the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska Youth Crisis Intervention Center in enhancing their court-ordered substance use disorder treatment program for youth ages 8–21 by implementing the DARTNA: Drum-Assisted Recovery Therapy for Native Americans curriculum. DARTNA is a promising substance use treatment program for American Indian/Alaska Natives that uses a cultural component to address opioid and stimulant use among Winnebago youth. The funding will support the purchase of the DARTNA curriculum and drum-making supplies to implement the program, as well as three contracted cultural specialists to provide culturally appropriate mentorship and expertise on the use of drums in Winnebago culture during this five-year project.
