Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $382,334)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office will promote domestic violence offender accountability and minimize re-victimization by timely and effective prosecution of offenders. A dedicated unit of prosecutors in the Milwaukee District Attorney's Office Domestic Violence Unit will work collaboratively with law enforcement, probation, and advocacy professionals to combat domestic violence. This arrangement permits thorough follow-up investigations to secure essential evidence, careful case preparation for trial, and timely and effective prosecution of offenders. It also ensures continuous contact with victims to ensure that their needs for safety are carefully considered during the prosecution of the case. The goal is effective coordination with law enforcement, judicial authorities, and community agencies to enhance the quality of domestic violence prosecutions.
