Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $180,933)
This award is made under the FY 2006 Tribal Courts Assistance Program and it supports the development, implementation, enhancement, and continuing operation of tribal justice systems. Allowable elements under the program may include, but are not limited to: establishing a core structure for a tribal court, improving case management, training court personnel, acquiring additional equipment and/or software, enhancing prosecution and indigent defense, supporting probation diversion and alternative sentencing programs, accessing services, focusing on juvenile services and multi disciplinary protocols for child physical and sexual abuse, and structuring intertribal or tribal appellate systems.
The Poarch Band of Creek Indians propose to
implement a justice practices project to enhance its tribal court program. The project will focus on the administrative and regulatory infrastructure of the court and services provided by the community justice program. The court's infrastructure and community justice program are critical to the effective management of increased caseloads and responsibilities. The project will enable the court to develop procedures and personnel manuals to provide consistent practices, procedures, and policies for court staff. The project will review indigenous justice practices of other tribes and will use this information to develop similar processes. The project will implement, monitor, track and assess a community justice program for adult and juvenile probationers.
