Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $250,000)
This award is made under the FY 2006 Tribal Courts Assistance Program and it supports the development, implementation, enhancement, and continuing operation of tribal justice systems. Allowable elements under the program may include, but are not limited to: establishing a core structure for a tribal court, improving case management, training court personnel, acquiring additional equipment and/or software, enhancing prosecution and indigent defense, supporting probation diversion and alternative sentencing programs, accessing services, focusing on juvenile services and multi disciplinary protocols for child physical and sexual abuse, and structuring intertribal or tribal appellate systems.
The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe will use $250,000 in funding to enhance their existing court by adding Family Court Services. The Family Court will address civil, juvenile and criminal caseloads focused on domestic violence, child abuse, elder abuse, drug and alcohol related offenses, and adoption and divorce. A Family Court Task Force will be established to implement an alternative dispute resolution process; training will be provided for court personnel; and a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed between the Tribe and the St. Lawrence and Franklin County Courts for the transfer and referral of cases to the Family Court when appropriate.
