Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $350,000)

The Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program is designed to assist states, state courts, local courts, units of local government, and Indian tribal governments in developing and establishing drug courts for substance-abusing adult and juvenile offenders. Drug court programs funded by the Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program are required by law to target nonviolent offenders. The program supports the following activities: adult drug court implementation, single jurisdiction drug court enhancement, statewide drug court enhancement, and planning efforts.

The Fourth Judicial Circuit, Marlboro County will use the Drug Court Discretionary Grant funds to implement an adult drug court program to serve 50 clients. With this intervention, significant drug dependent offenders will be removed from the jail system and offered necessary drug treatment. The citizens of Marlboro County have become a high risk for drug involvement due to the county's high unemployment rate, minimal job opportunities, below average education system, low income, poor transportation, and high access to drugs via interstate proximity. The drug court program will attempt to address these issues, and return more productive citizens to the community.
