In fiscal year 2007, the Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program will focus on funding local, regional, and national efforts within six major categories: 1) targeting violent crime; 2) preventing crime and drug abuse; 3) enhancing local law enforcement; 4) enhancing local courts; 5) enhancing local corrections and offender reentry; and 6) facilitating justice information sharing. All categories combat, address, or otherwise respond to precipitous or extraordinary increases in crime, or in a type or types of crime.
The Spirit Lake Tribe will use the FY 2007 discretionary funds to support a project to enhance local courts. The goal of the project is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Spirit Lake Tribal Court by automating court records and files. The Spirit Lake Tribal Court will provide training on the existing court database for all court personnel as well as personnel from the tribal Information Technology Support Program who will facilitate data entry and maintenance of the court database. By having court records entered into the existing database, the court will be much more efficient at identifying and addressing non-compliance with payment of court costs and fees, noncompliance with court orders and the timely scheduling of review hearings and other related hearings. Funds will be used to hire data entry clerks and to train all court personnel and the Tribal Information Technology Support program personnel on the use and maintenance of the existing court database.
