Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $182,165)

Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide commitment to reducing gun crime, links existing local programs together and provides them with necessary tools. PSN 1) takes a hard line against gun criminals, using every available means to create safer neighborhoods; 2) seeks to achieve heightened coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement; and 3) emphasizes tactical intelligence gathering, more aggressive prosecutions, and enhanced accountability through performance measures. The United States Attorney in each federal judicial district will lead the offensive. The fiscal agent, in coordination with the PSN Task Force, will allocate funds throughout the community.

The Kansas Office of the Attorney General will use their FY07 PSN funds to direct PSN funding in the target areas of Kansas City and Garden City. To combat the gun and violent gang problem, related murders and drug trafficking, and retribution-based crimes, the District will utilize PSN funds for equipment to monitor this activity. The Kansas City Police Department will purchase 17 cameras, with accessories, which will be installed throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. They will also purchase a computer to monitor the cameras and run the software, the software license, camera connection device, a base station for the hardware, and one-year maintenance. The Garden City Police Department will purchase a digital pole camera and six wireless headsets for their SWAT program.
