Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $149,998)

This award is made under the FY 2007 Tribal Courts Assistance Program and it supports the development, implementation, enhancement, and continuing operation of tribal justice systems. Allowable elements under the program may include, but are not limited to: establishing a core structure for a tribal court, improving case management, training court personnel, acquiring additional equipment and/or software, enhancing prosecution and indigent defense, supporting probation diversion and alternative sentencing programs, accessing services, focusing on juvenile services and multi disciplinary protocols for child physical and sexual abuse, and structuring intertribal or tribal appellate systems.

The overall goal of the Sac and Fox Tribal Court is to implement a criminal court, improve case management, implement a secure information system, hire a part-time magistrate, and procure appropriate training for judges and other court personnel. The project has two objectives: 1) develop and enhance court capacity, and 2) enhance the integration of tribal justice information systems. Grant funds will be spent over a two year period on BJA-sponsored training and travel, office supplies including required software, a contracted magistrate, other costs, and indirect costs.
