This award is made under the FY 2007 Tribal Courts Assistance Program and it supports the development, implementation, enhancement, and continuing operation of tribal justice systems. Allowable elements under the program may include, but are not limited to: establishing a core structure for a tribal court, improving case management, training court personnel, acquiring additional equipment and/or software, enhancing prosecution and indigent defense, supporting probation diversion and alternative sentencing programs, accessing services, focusing on juvenile services and multi disciplinary protocols for child physical and sexual abuse, and structuring intertribal or tribal appellate systems.

The Hannahville Indian Community will use the grant funds to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the tribal justice system by purchasing equipment, providing training, and three contract support staff: public defender, bailiff, and a court communications specialist. These contract positions will ensure successful and timely completion of court cases and improve customer services. The court communications specialist will develop a resource guide, in the form of a court bench book, which will open a communication link between court and customers. In addition, analytical assessment surveys will be conducted to enhance consumer service and provide public education and understanding of the tribal justice system.
