Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $1,078,444)

The Anti-Gang Initiative provides funds to support new or expanded anti-gang enforcement and prevention efforts under the existing Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiatives. The Anti-Gang initiative will be led by the United States Attorney in each of the 94 federal judicial districts across America. Grant funds will be awarded to a single fiscal agent in each of the 94 districts. The fiscal agent, will allocate the funds throughout the community to support the anti-gang initiative in that community.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, serving as the fiscal agent for the Middle District of Florida, will utilize its grant funds to reduce gang activity in Florida and has identified eleven agencies (Bradenton Police Department, Brevard County, Collier County Sheriff's Office, Flagler County Sheriff's Office, Ocala Police Department, Pasco County Sheriff's Office, Polk County Sheriff's Office, St. Petersburg Police Department, Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, Seminole County Sheriff's Office, and Wauchula Police Department) where Anti-Gang Initiative funds will be utilized. Activities will include: 1) improving evidence collection in gang cases by enhancing surveillance equipment and technology; 2) increasing enforcement efforts in gang-related incidents; 3) improving the collaboration and sharing of gang related information among local, state and federal law enforcement to identify gang members and to investigate identified gang members for arrest and prosecution; 4) conducting community and street outreach; 5) providing an after-school program to at-risk middle school students including tutoring and counseling; 6) funding overtime for law enforcement to combat gang related activities; 7) providing a full-time crime analyst to analyze gun-related violent crime, enter crime data into a customized database, and share information with partner law enforcement agencies; and 8) expanding the Victim Advocate Program to target victims of criminal gang activities.
