Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $300,000)

The Gang Member Reentry Assistance Project, authorized by 42 U.S.C. §3797w, is part of the Prisoner Reentry Initiative(PRI) and focuses on developing tools, strategies, and training products that will assist law enforcement and corrections agencies in addressing the many issues faced by returning juvenile and adult gang offenders. The American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) will develop products that will assist corrections and law enforcement agencies in addressing gang member reentry issues. These products will enhance training and technical assistance endeavors on a national level.

The Council of State Governments/American Probation and Parole Association (APPA), in cooperation with the Institute for Intergovernmental Research (IIR) and the Association of State Correctional Administrators (ASCA), will identify and disseminate specific strategies to facilitate enhanced communications between corrections and law enforcement regarding reentry of gang members into the community. APPA, IIR and ASCA will convene a focus group composed of law enforcement, probation, parole, institutional corrections, researchers, and others with relevant knowledge and experience to identify issues, needs, target audiences and materials to be used.
