Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $101,396)

The Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program is designed to assist states, state courts, local courts, units of local government, and Indian tribal governments in developing and establishing drug courts for substance-abusing adult and juvenile offenders. Drug court programs funded by the Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program are required by law to target nonviolent offenders. The Program supports the following activities:
adult drug court implementation, single jurisdiction drug court enhancement, statewide drug court enhancement, and planning efforts.

The County of Denton will use the Fiscal Year (FY) 2008 Single Jurisdiction Drug Court Enhancement grant to fund the Midwest Nebraska Drug Court (MNDC) program.

The MNDC operates through an interlocal agreement entered into by Dawson County, the Nebraska Supreme Court, and the Office of Probation Administration. The MNDC facilitates the coordinated efforts of the judiciary, prosecution, defense representatives, law enforcement, probation, treatment providers, educational entities and social services. The MNDC's goals are to provide participants in the drug court program with substance abuse intervention, treatment, educational classes, life skills enhancement services, and job skills training.

The MNDC will use award funds to reduce crime and recidivism in Denton County, reunite families torn apart by drug abuse, promote abstinence, and conduct an overall program evaluation. The program will provide additional services to participants including mental health, life skills enhancement services, intensive supervision, and judicial monitoring. The program has recognized that unaddressed mental health issues lead many participants back to drug and alcohol abuse after successful treatment. The MNDC will offer specialized training to drug court team members focusing on cultural and language barriers. It will also conduct a professional evaluation and increase the number of incentives and activities for program participants to promote a positive change in behavior.
