Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $31,302)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Minnesota State Patrol will acquire five drug sniffing K-9s in order to provide assistance for the detection and seizure of controlled substances in Minnesota's 8th Congressional District. Two of the drug sniffing K-9s will be assigned to Patrol District 3100 in Virginia, MN; two more K-9s will be assigned to Patrol District 2800 in Brainerd, MN; and one K-9 will replace an elderly K-9 in Patrol District 2700 in Duluth, MN. The drug sniffing K-9s will be used on a daily basis for routine drug interdiction patrol duties along roads and highways in the 8th Congressional District and would also be available to assist all area law enforcement agencies in that district free of charge.
