Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $357,739)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The City of South Gate will continue funding an existing School Resource Officer (SRO) and add one additional SRO to the school system. The grant funds will allow one SRO to be assigned to the Southeast High School and one SRO to be assigned to the South Gate High School. The SRO has been an integral part in many of the current programs in the schools, including the Parent Empowerment Program (P.E.P.), "Faces of Meth" class, and the Substance Abuse Narcotics Education (S.A.N.E.) program. Two SROs will share the responsibility of providing service to all of the schools, thus giving more quality time to deliver training and education to the administrators, students, teachers, and parents. The SROs will also help continue the programs that were brought to the schools in the previous year and bring additional and more diverse and creative programs into the schools.
