Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $1,169,125)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Office will continue to implement the Missouri Sheriff's Methaphetamine Relief Team (MOSMART) Project. They serve as the fiscal agent for the sheriff's offices and task forces that are combating methamphetamine production, distribution, and use across the State of Missouri. The mission of the MOSMART Project is to reduce the production and use of methamphetamine by having the availability of additional meth investigators working the field statewide; training law enforcement in the recognition, collection, removal, and destruction of methamphetamine; funding public awareness programs; and making presentations on the methamphetamine drug problem at schools. Through MOSMART, assistance is provided to law enforcement in protecting local communities from the methamphetamine epidemic.
