Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $254,889)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) will support ten drug courts in eight New Mexico judicial districts. AOC will enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with each court. AOC will contract for additional treatment capacity allowing the program to expand clients and for access to a ropes course for the juvenile participants. The AOC will purchase drug testing kits, including a breathalyzer, and will fund various court positions throughout the eight judicial districts. With the assistance provided by AOC, these drug courts will provide treatment and assistance to adults and juveniles in crisis due to substance abuse.
