Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $156,511)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

Ventura County, through the Ventura County District Attorney's East County Courthouse-Family Justice Prosecutor Program, will provide the residents and law enforcement of Simi Valley and Moorpark with a prosecutor nearby to respond to child abuse and sexual assault reports at the region's Multi-Disciplinary Interview Center (MDIC), also known as Safe Harbor-East. The Family Justice Prosecutor (FJP) will also provide trainings and outreach to law enforcement and residents on family violence crimes and investigations. The FJP will also actively engage law enforcement officers in the East County by providing training in conducting thorough investigations and submitting reports of all incidents involving family violence. The MDIC is a collaborative effort among public and private agencies within the East County, providing victims with an interview location that promotes dignity and respect and minimizes victim trauma.
