Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $223,587)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

Derby Public Schools, Unified School District 260, will purchase safety enhancing materials to improve the safety and security of the district. The district will add security cameras, remote locks, entrance monitoring systems, security radios, security lights, and other safety enhancements to 13 school sites serving over 6,000 students. The District is focusing more keenly on safety and security issues as part of a larger strategic planning process.
